BALTIMORE, MD, March 16, 2020 – Wright, Constable and Skeen LLP is proud to have held the latest installment of their “Rosie the Lawyer” program for female CollegeBound Foundation students on March 6, 2020. The firm started the program in 2013 to promote a “We can do it” sentiment among young women interested in the field of law.
The program derives its name from the revolutionary “Rosie the Riveter,” an initiative designed to encourage women to enter the workplace during labor shortages as a result of World War II. Our “Rosie the Lawyer” program seeks to introduce young women to the possibility of a career path in the law.
For the 2020 “Rosie the Lawyer” program, the firm welcomed 22 selected students to our Baltimore location and the day began with an introduction by WCS attorney, Lisa Sparks. The students were then treated to hearing from a variety of speakers, including: Tisha Edwards, Executive Director at the Mayor’s Office of Children & Family Services; Tywanna Taylor, Senior Director of Grants & Contracts at the Family League of Baltimore; and Jacia Smith, Chief of Staff at the City of Baltimore Recreation & Parks. The students also had the opportunity to hear from WCS female attorneys: Cynthia Rodgers-Waire, Mollie Caplis, and Lisa Sparks.
Our guests continued their day by meeting Judge Diana Smith in her courtroom, hearing her personal experiences through her career path, and observing the afternoon’s proceedings. After returning to WCS, Lisa Sparks discussed the Law Links program, sponsored by the Maryland State Bar Association. Law Links is a 7-week, paid summer internship that places high school juniors and seniors in law firms and law-related agencies. She provided the student attendees with a Law Links application.
Working with the CollegeBound Foundation, the WCS “Rosie the Lawyer” program was developed to provide a pathway to young women in Baltimore City to explore a career in the law and to expose these bright and talented young ladies to the legal resources to begin a future in the law.
