Gerard Preston “Jerry” Sunderland of Catonsville, Maryland, lost his battle with cancer on February 14, 2020 at the age 73. Jerry is survived by his loving and devoted wife of more than 50 years, Suzanne (Sue) Metz Sunderland; his three sons and their wives, Mark and Marci, David and Cristina, Andrew and Annie; his grandchildren, Maya, Gray, Hayley, Heron and Jonathan. His brother Ron Sunderland, and sister and brother-in law Pat and Ron Swerczek.
Jerry was born in Baltimore to Irene Doris and William Sunderland on March 31, 1946. He attended Mt. St Joseph High School, Tulane University, and University of Maryland Law school. He served his country as a lieutenant in the US Army during the Vietnam War. He held the role of Assistant Attorney General and Principal Counsel, Maryland Transportation Authority. He was a partner at Whiteford, Taylor and Preston, LLP for 28 years than transitioned to a partner at Wright, Constable & Skeen, LLP for the last 10 years of his career. Jerry served on the Board of Directors for the Surety Claims Institute since 2012. He holds an AV Peer Review from Martindale-Hubbell, was listed in The Best Lawyers in America for Insurance Law 2013-2019, and was named to Maryland’s list of Super Lawyers for Construction Law 2007, 2010-2019.
Jerry enjoyed coaching his sons in youth athletics, particularly lacrosse, where he served as both a coach and commissioner for the Catonsville Lacrosse program for many years. Jerry was an avid golfer. He enjoyed trying new courses with his sons as well as his regular rounds of golf at Rolling Road Country Club or Piney Branch Golf Club. Jerry enjoyed regular family vacations with his family in Ocean City, Maryland and exploring the US and oversees, particularly Hawaii, Turks & Caicos, Scotland, Germany and other European countries. Jerry will be deeply missed by his wife, sons & daughters-in-law and grandchildren.
