New Form Edition Officially Ends Option to Request a Social Security Number When Applying for an EAD
Starting March 5, 2026, a new edition of Form I-765 must be used when applying for an Employment Authorization Document (i.e., work permit) with USCIS. The new edition eliminates the question asking if the applicant wants the Social Security Administration (SSA) to issue a Social Security Number card upon approval of the Form I-765. The revision was anticipated given that last Spring the SSA stopped issuing SSN cards for applicants who requested such issuance in their Form I-765 application. Foreign nationals in need of a Social Security Number must now apply at their local SSA office.
